Assistant

The assistant summarizes the page you're on, answers questions about it, and translates it. It runs on your Mac with Apple's on-device model and translation, so nothing about the page or your questions is sent anywhere, and it costs nothing.

It needs macOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence turned on (System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri) on a Mac that supports it.

Opening it

Press ⌥⌘A (View → Assistant). It opens beside the page, so you can read both. Press ⌥⌘A again, Esc in the question field or × to close it.

Summarize Page and Translate Page (View menu or the command palette) open it and start right away.

What it does

  • Summarize gives one sentence on what the page is about and its main points as a short list.
  • Ask about this page…: type a question and press Enter. The answer is in the language you ask in and uses only what the page says; if the page doesn't say, the assistant says so.
  • Translate translates the page's text, paragraph by paragraph as it goes, into the chosen language.

The language chips (English, Norsk, Svenska, Dansk, Deutsch, Français, Español) choose the language summaries and translations are written in. Litr starts with your Mac's language and remembers your choice.

Answers appear as they're written. Copy puts the answer on the clipboard. Starting something new stops what the assistant was doing.

What it reads

On articles it reads the article, found the same way as reader mode, without menus, ads and comments. On other pages it reads the visible text. Apple's on-device model can only take in so much, so on long pages it reads the first part and says so under the answer. Translation reads the whole text.

Translation languages

Translation uses the languages installed on your Mac. If one is missing, the assistant tells you to add it in System Settings → General → Language & Region → Translation Languages.

Good to know

  • The on-device model is small. Summaries are useful, but it can get details wrong; check what matters against the page.
  • Apple's model may decline some pages, and supports a limited set of languages. The assistant says when that happens.
  • The assistant isn't available in web apps.
  • It works in forget tabs too: nothing is stored either way.
