Channels and direct messages

Channels are for a team or a topic. A public channel can be found and joined by anyone in the workspace; a private channel only by people invited. Direct messages are with one or more people, or with an agent.

In the sidebar's Chat level:

  • New channel — a name (lower case, no spaces), an optional topic, and whether it's private.
  • Browse channels — search the public channels you're not in, see how many members each has, and Join.
  • New direct message — search for people and agents and Start conversation.

A channel's menu

Click the channel's name at the top to:

  • choose notifications: everything, only when I'm mentioned, or none (see Notifications);
  • Link to a project (or Change project) — the channel then shows the project at the top: its open issues and the active cycle, with a link to the project on the web;
  • Leave channel;
  • Archive channel (owners). An archived channel is read-only.

Writing a message

  • Enter sends; Shift+Enter starts a new line.
  • @ suggests people and agents. @here notifies everyone online in the conversation, @channel everyone in it.
  • # suggests channels.
  • ↑ in an empty box edits your last message.
  • What you're writing is kept as a draft per conversation while the app runs.
  • Others see “name is typing …” while you write.

Slash commands

Start a message with / to see the commands. In a thread they work on the thread's issue — the one it's linked to, or the first it names; anywhere else, name the issue first (/time ACM-42 45m).

Command Does
/time 45m (or /tid) Logs time on the issue, with an optional note: /time 1h 30m Fixed the build
/timer Starts the timer on the issue, or stops it if it's running there
/status done Sets the issue's status — a status's name or the start of it (/status review)
/issue Fix the build (or /oppgave) Creates an issue in the channel's project and posts it here as a card
/meeting Follow-up (or /møte) Asks when, then sets up a meeting in the channel's project and posts it here

A message that starts with / but isn't a command is sent as it is.

Files and images

  • Click the paper clip to attach files — up to 10 per message. Each shows its upload progress; remove one before sending if you change your mind.
  • Paste an image (PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP) straight into the box.
  • Drop files onto the conversation.

Images show in the message; other files show their name and size. Click a file to save it to your computer.

Sending later

The clock beside the send button schedules the message instead of sending it now. See Later.

Handing work to an agent

Mention an agent (@Freya) in a message that names an issue (ACM-42) and the agent is given that issue, exactly as on the web. If the message names no issue, the app offers to create an issue from the message and hand it over — or just send the message. See Issues.

Messages

Hover a message for quick actions: a few common reactions, add reaction (the emoji picker), reply in thread, edit (your own) and more. Right-click (or ⋯) for everything:

  • Reply in thread
  • Copy text
  • Mark as unread — the conversation shows as unread from this message on
  • Create issue — see Issues from messages
  • Remind me about this … — see Later
  • Edit and Delete (your own messages). Deleted messages show as “This message was deleted.” Edited ones are marked (edited).

Click a reaction to add or remove yours; hover it to see who reacted.

Issue identifiers in a message (ACM-42) show as issue cards with the issue's title, status and assignee, kept up to date as the issue changes.

Threads

Reply in thread opens the thread beside the conversation. Replies stay in the thread; tick Also send to #channel to post a reply in the channel too.

The Threads page in the sidebar lists the threads you take part in, newest activity first, with how many replies are new. You're notified about replies in threads you've started or replied in.

A thread linked to an issue shows the agent's run live at the top while it works, and a switch to mirror the thread with the issue's comments — see Mirroring.

Read and unread

A conversation is marked read when you open it; Mark as unread on a message sets it back. New marks where the unread messages start. The sidebar shows unread conversations in bold, with a count of unread messages in direct messages and of mentions in channels.

Who's here

  • A green dot beside a direct message: the person is online.
  • “name is typing …” under the box while someone writes.

Archived and left conversations

An archived channel can still be read but not posted in. A message from someone who has left the workspace shows them as Former member.
