Text containers
A page's text lives in text containers, boxes you place anywhere below the page header.
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| New container | Double-click empty paper, Insert › Text Box, Home › Text container, or click empty paper with the Type tool |
| Edit | Double-click the container, or select it and press Return. With the Type tool a single click is enough. |
| Finish | Click elsewhere, or press Esc |
| Select | Click it with the Select tool |
| Move | Drag the grip along its top edge |
| Resize | Drag the handle at its bottom-right corner. A text container never gets shorter than its text. |
| Cut, copy, paste | Home › Cut / Copy / Paste, or ⌘X / ⌘C / ⌘V with the container selected (not while editing its text). A pasted copy appears slightly down and to the right. |
| Delete | Home › Delete, or ⌫ with the container selected |
A container grows to fit its text as you type. Notr keeps what you type as you go: a short pause (under half a second) commits the text to the page's history, and the page is saved shortly after.
Inside a container the editor works as on the rest of the Mac: arrow keys, ⌥ and ⌘ with arrows, Shift to select, double-click for a word, triple-click for a line, ⌘A, ⌘C, ⌘X, ⌘V, and input methods and dead keys. ⌘Z undoes typing within the container; once there is nothing left to undo there, ⌘Z undoes the page's history. Tab inserts four spaces.
Formatting
Formatting applies to the selected text while you're editing a container. With no selection, or with the container selected but not being edited, it applies to the whole container.
| Command | Shortcut | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Bold, Italic, Underline | ⌘B, ⌘I, ⌘U | Toggles. If some of the text already has it, it's added to all. |
| Strikethrough | ⇧⌘X | Toggles |
| Grow font / Shrink font | ±2 points, between 6 and 144 | |
| Font & size | A font and a size from 6 to 144 | |
| Font color | A swatch or a hex color such as #803AB3 |
|
| Highlight | Toggles a yellow highlight | |
| Clear format | Returns the whole container to plain 16-point text |
The fonts offered are the system font, Helvetica Neue, Arial, Avenir Next, Georgia, Times New Roman, Palatino, Menlo, Courier New and Chalkboard SE. Pages written with NoteSpace's Windows fonts show them in the nearest Mac font: Segoe UI, Open Sans and Calibri in the system font, Cambria in Georgia, Consolas in Menlo.
Paragraphs and styles
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
| Bullets / Numbering | Marks each paragraph of the container with • or 1., 2., 3. Choosing one turns the other off. |
| Align left / Center / Align right | Aligns the container's lines |
| Heading 1 | 26 points, bold, purple |
| Heading 2 | 21 points, bold, dark grey |
| Normal | 16 points, regular, black |
Alignment, bullets and numbering always apply to the whole container.
To-dos
Home › To Do Tag turns the selected text container into a to-do with a check box, or back into plain text. With nothing selected it adds a new to-do. Click the check box to tick it; a ticked to-do is struck through.
Search can list open or completed to-dos across all notebooks.
Tags
Important (★) and Question (?) on the Home tab add or remove a tag on the selected container. Tags show to the right of the container. Find Tags lists every tagged note and to-do, in all notebooks, and opens the one you choose.
Links
Insert › Link (⌘K) asks for an address, which must start with https://,
http:// or mailto:. The selected text becomes a blue, underlined link; in an empty
container the address itself is inserted as the link. Links are kept in HTML exports
and in .notespace backups.
Dates, times and symbols
Insert › Date, Time and Date & Time type the current date or time at the cursor. Insert › Symbols asks for any characters (such as ✓ → ★ © Ω π ∑ ± ∞) and types them. If no text is being edited, Notr edits the selected text container or adds a new one.
Dividers
Insert › Divider adds a horizontal line below the lowest note on the page.
Templates
Insert › Templates creates a new page in the current section from a template:
| Template | Contents |
|---|---|
| Blank page | Nothing |
| Meeting notes | An objective heading, attendees/date/location, discussion notes and an action-item table |
| Project checklist | A heading and five to-dos from Define the goal to Share the result |
| Ideas and sketches | Dot-grid paper and a heading |
Paper
View › Page Setup sets the page's paper: Plain, Rule Lines, Grid Lines or Dot Grid, and a Page Color.
Word count
Review › Word Count shows the words and characters on the page (text and table cells), and how many note containers and ink strokes it has.
