Updates and About

Automatic updates

etrans keeps itself up to date from elyracode.com/etrans.

  • When it checks: 30 seconds after etrans starts, and then once a day while it runs. Each check fetches one small file, https://elyracode.com/etrans/latest.json, which names the newest version. Nothing about you or your servers is sent.
  • When there is a new version, a strip under the toolbar says so:
    • Install downloads and installs it.
    • What's New opens elyracode.com/etrans.
    • Later hides the strip until the next version.
  • When it is installed, the strip offers Relaunch. Nothing restarts until you choose to; the new version is what opens next either way.

To turn the daily check off, open Settings (⌘,) and untick Check for new versions once a day. You can still check at any time with etrans → Check for Updates….

How updates are kept safe

Before etrans replaces anything, it checks that the download:

  1. matches the SHA-256 checksum published with it,
  2. is an etrans app signed with etrans's Developer ID (Apple team 7G383N3VY7, identifier no.gets.etrans) and unchanged since it was signed,
  3. is the version the website says it is.

If any check fails, nothing is replaced and the strip says why. The old version is moved aside, not written over, while the new one goes in, and is put back if the new one cannot be moved into place.

Updates replace etrans where it is installed, normally /Applications, so your account must be able to write there. Administrator accounts can. An etrans started from a build rather than an installed app does not update itself.

About etrans

Choose etrans → About etrans. The sheet shows the version you are running, what etrans is built with, the update status with a button to check, install or relaunch, and a link to elyracode.com/etrans.
