Editing files on the server

Editing files on the server

Double-click a file on the server (or select it and press Return, or right-click and choose Open and Edit). etrans downloads it and opens it in the app your Mac uses for that kind of file.

Every time you save it there, etrans uploads it again, to the folder it came from, replacing the file on the server. The uploads show in the transfers drawer like any other.

Good to know

  • The copy lives in a folder of its own under your Mac's temporary folder, one per file on the server, so two files with the same name in different places never meet.
  • etrans watches the copy for saves for four hours after you open it. To keep editing after that, open the file again from the server.
  • The upload goes to the server you opened it from. When the connection drops and etrans gets it back (see Reconnecting), later saves go up over the new connection. A save made while it is down fails in the drawer; press Retry on it once the connection is back.
  • The upload replaces the server's file without asking, since that is the point.
