Files
Both panes work the same way, one on this Mac and one on the server. The pane you clicked last is the one the toolbar and the keys act on; Tab switches.
Moving around
- Open a folder: double-click it, or select it and press Return, ⌘↓ or ⌘O.
- Enclosing folder: ⌘↑, or the ↑ button in the toolbar. The folder you came from is selected.
- Back and forward: ⌘[ and ⌘], or the arrows in the toolbar.
- The path: the line above the list shows where you are. Click any folder in it to go there. A deep path shows its last few folders and a … for the rest; click … to go to the nearest folder it hides.
- Go to Folder: ⇧⌘G and type a path.
~is your home folder on either side, and a path that does not start with/is taken from the folder shown.
Selecting
Click to select, ⌘-click to add or remove one, ⇧-click to select a range. ↑ and ↓ move the selection, ⇧↑ and ⇧↓ extend it, ⌘A selects everything. The line at the bottom of the pane says how many items there are, how many are selected and how big the selected files are.
Type a name to select it, as in Finder: the first item whose name starts with what you type. Type quickly and the letters make one name; stop for a second and the next letter starts again.
Filtering
⌘F opens a field above the list. As you type, only the items whose names contain the text are shown, in any case. Return or ↓ goes down into the list with the filter still on; Esc, or the × beside the field, closes it and shows everything again. Going to another folder closes it too.
Sorting and hidden files
Click Name, Size or Modified to sort by it; click again to reverse. Folders always stay on top. Hidden files (names starting with a dot) are not shown until you press ⇧⌘. or the eye in the toolbar; whether new panes show them is a setting.
Opening files
- On this Mac, a file opens in its usual app.
- On the server, a file is downloaded and opened in its usual app, and saving it uploads it again. See Editing files on the server.
Quick Look
Press the space bar to look at the selected files in Quick Look, as in Finder, and again, or Esc, to close it. With the panel open, ↑ and ↓ move through the list and the panel follows.
On the server, a file is downloaded first, into a temporary folder, and is not downloaded again while it is unchanged. Files over 64 MB are not looked at from the server; download them instead.
New folder, new file, rename, delete
- New folder: ⇧⌘N, or the folder button in the toolbar. Type a name and press Return; the new folder is selected.
- New file: ⌥⌘N makes an empty file,
untitled.txtunless you name it otherwise. Open it to start writing in it. - Rename: F2, or right-click and Rename…. A name with
/in it is refused, and so is a name that is already taken, on either side: nothing is ever replaced by a rename or a move. - Delete: ⌘⌫, or right-click. etrans asks first. On this Mac the items go to the Trash, on any disk, and Put Back in the Trash brings them back where they were. On the server they are deleted, folders with everything in them, and that cannot be undone.
Moving within a pane
Drag items onto a folder in the same pane to move them there, as in Finder. Dragging a folder into itself does nothing.
Copying between the panes
Drag between the panes, drop files from Finder onto the server pane, or press ⇧⌘→ and ⇧⌘←. See Transfers.
Copy and Paste
⌘C copies the selected items and ⌘V pastes them into the folder a pane shows, as in Finder. Where they go decides what happens:
| Copied from | Pasted in | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| This Mac, or Finder | The server pane | Uploaded |
| The server | The Mac pane | Downloaded |
| This Mac, or Finder | The Mac pane | Copied, as Finder pastes |
| The server | The server pane | Copied on the server itself |
Files copied in the Mac pane paste in Finder too. Pasting never replaces anything: a copy in the folder its original is in is called “… copy”, then “… copy 2”. Uploads and downloads go through the transfer queue and ask about files that are already there, as dragging does. Files copied on one server can be pasted on this Mac but not on another server. Copied from the server and pasted somewhere that takes text, they are their paths.
Dragging out to Finder
Drag files out of either pane and drop them in Finder, on the desktop, or in any app that takes files. Files on this Mac are copied, never moved, whatever Finder would do on the same disk. Files on the server are downloaded to where they are dropped, through the transfer queue; a name already there gets a copy beside it rather than being replaced.
The right-click menu
Right-click an item, or several, for:
- Open (on the server, Open and Edit),
- Upload or Download, to the folder the other pane shows,
- Quick Look,
- Rename…, Get Info, Copy, Copy Path,
- Show in Finder (this Mac) or Open in Terminal (a folder on the server),
- Move to Trash or Delete….
Right-click empty space for New Folder…, New File…, Go to Folder…, Paste, Get Info on the folder itself, Refresh, Show Hidden Files, Copy Folder Path, and Open in Finder or Open in Terminal.
The shortcut beside each item is the key that does the same thing. Arrow keys and Return work in the menu too.
