Troubleshooting

Connecting

The password was not accepted. The server said no to the password. A password saved in Keychain may be out of date: edit the server, clear the Password field, and you will be asked.

Could not log in as … The server accepts: publickey. The server wants a key, and none of the ones tried were accepted. Check that the key is in the agent (ssh-add -l) or in ~/.ssh, or choose it with Key File in the server's form, and that its public half is in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server.

… did not answer within 15 seconds. Nothing answered at the address and port: check the name, the port, a VPN, or a firewall.

The host key for … has changed since it was last seen. See Host keys and certificates. Do not remove the line unless you know why the key changed.

… offered a key that ~/.ssh/known_hosts marks as revoked. Someone marked the key @revoked. etrans will not connect until the server has a new key.

… offered a host certificate from a trusted authority, but … The certificate is expired, for another host, or not a host certificate. Whoever runs the server has to issue a new one.

The server has no SFTP subsystem. The server's sshd does not offer SFTP (Subsystem sftp in sshd_config). The terminal still works.

Jump hosts and forwarding

… does not allow forwarding. Its sshd_config needs AllowTcpForwarding yes. The jump host, or for a forward the server, refuses tunnels.

Could not listen on 127.0.0.1:… Another program on this Mac uses the port.

Files and transfers

Not allowed to change the owner of … Only an administrator (root, on a server) can give files to another user, and a group must be one you are in.

A file named .something.etrans-part is left behind. It is what was copied of a transfer that failed. Retry in the drawer carries on from it; if you no longer need it, delete it. It is hidden unless you show hidden files.

… already exists, when renaming or moving. Something by that name is already in the folder, and etrans never replaces it. Rename or move that one first.

Could not move … to the Trash. The disk has no Trash, as some network shares do not, or you may not change the folder. Delete it in Finder, which offers to delete it at once.

“…” is too large to look at from the server. Quick Look downloads files from the server first, up to 64 MB. Download the file to look at it.

Files dropped in Finder from the server pane take a moment to appear. They are downloaded first; the transfer drawer shows how far along they are.

~/.ssh is not shown in the file panel. It is a hidden folder. Choose… beside the key field lists the keys in it; in the panel, press ⇧⌘. to show hidden files or ⇧⌘G and type ~/.ssh.

Updates

Could not update: the download is signed, but not by etrans's developer, or …does not match what the feed said it would be. The download is not the release it claims to be, and nothing was replaced. Try again later, or download from elyracode.com/etrans.

Could not move the old etrans aside: permission denied. Your account cannot write where etrans is installed. Install the new version from the website, or use an administrator account.
