Installation

Requirements

  • macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon. The app says LSMinimumSystemVersion 13.0, because the daemon is registered as a login item with SMAppService. There is no Intel build.

  • At least one agent CLI on the machine, signed in:

    • Elyra (elyra). It is the default for new bots, and the new-bot proposal ("Suggest") always runs with Elyra.
    • Claude Code (claude).
    • Grok Build (grok).

See Agents for how each of them is signed in for Huskarl.

  • Optional: a Chromium browser, for bots that will use web pages. Huskarl looks for Google Chrome for Testing, Chromium, Google Chrome, Brave and Microsoft Edge in /Applications, in that order. See Browser.

From the disk image

A release consists of Huskarl-<version>-arm64.dmg. It is signed with a Developer ID, notarized by Apple and has the ticket stapled, so it opens without warnings.

  1. Open the disk image.
  2. Drag Huskarl.app to Applications (/Applications).
  3. Start Huskarl from Applications.

First launch

The app does three things before the window connects to the daemon:

  1. Removes the developer LaunchAgent if there is one: ~/Library/LaunchAgents/no.huskarl.daemon.plist, made by scripts/install-launch-agent.sh. It is stopped with launchctl bootout and the file is deleted. Otherwise two daemons would fight over the same socket.
  2. Registers the daemon as a login item. The app has a LaunchAgent in Contents/Library/LaunchAgents/no.huskarl.huskarld.plist and registers it with SMAppService. From then on huskarld starts when you log in, also without the window being open.
  3. Asks you to approve if macOS requires it. The app then opens System Settings → General → Login Items. Turn on Huskarl there.

If the window cannot reach a daemon, it starts the huskarld that sits next to it. While it connects, it says "Connecting to huskarld…".

The window starts in English. To switch to Norwegian, open ⌘, → Appearance → Language and choose Norsk. See Settings.

Where things end up

Everything Huskarl stores is in ~/.huskarl (the folder has mode 0700). The daemon writes its log to ~/.huskarl/logs/huskarld.log. Logins for mail and Félagi are in the Keychain, not in the folder. See Reference: configuration.

Uninstalling

Quit Huskarl, turn off Huskarl under Login Items and delete /Applications/Huskarl.app. If you also want to remove the bots, the threads and the settings, delete ~/.huskarl. The logins remain in the Keychain under the services no.huskarl.google, no.huskarl.microsoft and no.huskarl.felagi, and can be deleted in Keychain Access.
